Amherst State Park is an irregular shaped 77+ acre conservation park in the Town of Amherst. The Park extends from Glen Drive to Sheridan Drive. The main entrance is at 508 Mill Street. There are also unmarked access points on Reist Street, Glen Ave, and Sheridan Drive.

The Three Geographical Sections

The Southern section  abuts Glen Drive in the Village of Williamsville. It is bordered on the east and west by the Glen Park parking lots. The Southern section of Amherst State Park is a wooded (and sometime wet) area along the banks of Ellicott creek. I end the Southern section at the old orchard. It includes a section that extends east to Reist Street.

The Middle section includes the property adjacent to and surrounding the old St. Mary of the Angels Convent Mother House. It includes a former orchard and an evergreen treed plot. It also includes the main entrance to the Park from Mill Street and a parking lot. In fact, many people think that the Park consist only of this section because there is no signage for the Park at Glen Ave, Sheridan Drive, or 508 Mill Street. That lack of signage is a result of concessions made to adjacent property owners by the Town during the preparation of the Master Plan.

The Northern section abuts Sheridan Drive in the Town of Amherst and is bordered on the east by the Hutchinson Hose Company (a volunteer fire company). It is bordered on the west by a youth foundation that bought the former facilities of the Hutchinson Hose Company. The northern section consist mostly of an open field with some wooded sections. There is a baseball backstop erected by the Town of Amherst at the very northern portion of the field. An earthern bream separates the field from Sheridan Drive. At the southern end of the field there is a wooden fence that appears to be impassable, but in fact there is a gate that is left open to allow people to continue heading south in the Park.

The Northern section of the Park also includes 90-foot wide strip of land at 508 Mill Street that extends back to the main northern section. Viewed from the street it just appears to be an empty lot (there was a dilapidated house torn down in 2008). But it is state land (although it may be sold soon) and the public is free to use it for the time being.

The Southern and Middle sections of the Park are connected to the Northern section by a small strip of land that is border on the east by a private homeowner and on the west by the iron fence surrounding the Holy Family Home.
