Two hikers were rescued early Wednesday morning after becoming lost in DeerLick Preserve in Zoar Valley in Cattaraugus County. They had enter the preserve at 4 pm Tuesday night and became lost when they tried to take a shortcut back to their vehicle by bushwhacking through the woods.
A relative went to the area looking for them when they did not return as expected. After finding their vehicle but no sign of the two hikers, the relative called emergency services. An Erie County Sheriff’s Department helicopter was used to locate the men. NYS DEC Forest Rangers Bob Rogers and Tim Flanagan then hiked into the area, found the two lost hikers, and escorted them to safety.
The two hikers had no map or gps, no flashlights, and no cell phones. They were lucky that they had a concerned relative who know their plans.
